Keep it consistent

Pay the allowance on the same day each week. Predictability is what lets kids plan, save up and learn from their own choices.

A general guide for teaching money skills, not financial advice. Choose amounts that fit your own budget.

How it works

A popular rule of thumb is about one unit of your currency per year of age, per week — so a 7-year-old might get around 7 a week. It’s only a starting point: set what fits your family and budget, and keep it consistent so your child can plan.

Splitting the money into spend, save and give teaches budgeting early. This tool uses a simple 50% spend, 30% save, 20% give split, but you can adjust the jars to match your values — the habit matters more than the exact percentages.

Frequently asked questions

How much allowance should I give by age? +

A common guide is about one unit of currency per year of age each week, but there’s no single right number. Base it on your budget, what the money is meant to cover, and what’s normal among your child’s friends.

Should allowance be tied to chores? +

Families do both. Tying it to chores links money to work; giving it freely (with some chores expected anyway) keeps the focus on learning to manage money. Pick one approach and be clear about it.

What is a good way to split the money? +

The classic spend, save and give jars work well — for example 50/30/20. Seeing money set aside to save and to give builds patience and generosity alongside spending.

When should kids start getting an allowance? +

Often around ages 5–7, once children understand that money buys things and can wait a little for what they want. Start small and grow it as they handle it well.
